The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday it is investigating a series of crashes involving startup Avride’s self-driving cars that have raised questions about the vehicles’ capabilities.
NHTSA said the vehicles’ performance could indicate inappropriate confidence and lack of competence and “could also constitute a traffic safety violation,” adding that some of the crashes resulted in property damage and one reported minor injuries.
NHTSA noted that Avride is operating some of its self-driving vehicles on the Uber UBER.N platform and has been offering rides to the public since December in Dallas, which has been involved in multiple crashes.
