Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hanaway filed a lawsuit against Lorex Corporation, a major seller of home cameras and baby monitors. The lawsuit alleges that Lorex, through its manufacturer Dahua, concealed significant ties to the Chinese military, putting families at risk.
Lorex remains in contact with its former owner and ongoing parts supplier Dahua, despite the U.S. Department of Defense labeling it a Chinese military company that threatens national security, according to the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.
The lawsuit claims Lorex’s ties to the Chinese government put Missourians’ data and security at risk.
The lawsuit alleges that Lorex misrepresented and omitted basic facts not only to consumers, but also to retailers used by the state of Missouri to review products sold in its stores, concealing the involvement of Dahua and even the Chinese Communist Party and threats to national security.
“Lorex told the family that its cameras were ‘designed to be private’ while concealing its relationship with a Chinese military company,” Hanaway said. “These cameras watch our babies breathe, capture their children’s voices, and record families’ most intimate moments. When companies won’t tell the truth about their ties to hostile foreign governments, my office will step in to protect families.”
Lorex products are sold at Best Buy, Staples, Costco, Menards, Micro Center and Office Depot, and online through the Lorex website, Amazon and other third-party retailers.
The Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Lorex in Jefferson County Circuit Court, seeking robust remedies under the Missouri Merchandising Practices Act. This includes damages of up to $1,000 for each Missouri consumer sold a Lorex camera within the past five years, more than $1.8 million in damages, and injunctive relief to prohibit the continued unlawful and false representations of product safety.
Similar lawsuits have been filed against Lorex in Nebraska and Texas.
