UN officials call on nations to support Syria in Middle East conflict – JURIST

UN officials spoke At a U.N. Security Council meeting on Wednesday, he called on the international community to step up support for Syria’s social and political progress amid the war in the Middle East.

Deputy Special Envoy for Syria, Claudio Cordone, UN Humanitarian Affairs Representative, Joyce Msuya, and Goodwill Ambassador and Syrian Olympian Yusra Mardini warned that current violence in the Middle East threatens humanitarian progress in Syria following the end of the country’s 14-year civil war and the collapse of former leader Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Regional tensions caused by clashes between US, Israeli and Iranian forces have forced over 140,000 people to seek safety in Syria. Many have fled to avoid falling debris after Iranian missiles were intercepted in Syrian airspace.

“LWe will redouble our efforts to help Syria protect itself from this conflictand let us refocus on helping Syria continue and even accelerate its path to recovery, reconstruction and stability,” Cordone said.

After the fall of Assad in December 2024, the country entered a fragile state of social and political recovery. The Center for Strategic & International Studies has reported that Syrians have since been affected by “overwhelming freedom of expression without fear of consequences.” The country has also undertaken diplomatic outreach efforts to forge ties with regional and international powers.

Syrians are also demonstrating their resilience and determination to rebuild their lives. Those with the financial means have begun rebuilding their homes, even amid complete destruction and a lack of basic public services,” the center reported.
