UN experts call for immediate humanitarian aid in South Sudan – JURIST

A group of 16 UN experts responded on Thursday to a “catastrophic human rights and humanitarian crisis”. urged the immediate protection of civilians and the facilitation of humanitarian access in South Sudan.

The experts warned that “South Sudan is at a critical juncture” and that “all parties must immediately cease hostilities and engage in meaningful dialogue to prevent further escalation of the conflict and protect civilians.”

The experts added: “Without immediate and sustained support, millions risk being left without the help they need to survive.” The experts called for immediate action to protect the people in the country:

The principles of Distinction, proportionality and caution must be strictly respected…civilians and civilian objects must never be attacked. Measures must be taken to protect the population and the safety of humanitarian personnel must be guaranteed at all times.

South Sudan is currently facing one of the largest displacement crises. In Jonglei State alone, over 267,000 people were reported as displaced in 2026. A total of 13.6 million people are estimated to have been displaced, most of whom are women and children under 18.

The situation in South Sudan is tense monitored conducted by the United Nations and the experts are in contact with the government of South Sudan.
