The Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office (SFMO) says it is investigating a residential fire in Odessa that killed one firefighter and injured six others.
Firefighters from Odessa Fire Rescue and the West Odessa Volunteer Fire Department are battling a blaze on Sunday, June 14. Seven firefighters were injured and transported to local hospitals. Six people were treated and released. Lieutenant Isay Huerta succumbed to his injuries.
Odessa Fire Rescue Fire Chief Jason Cotton said the situation worsened during the firefighting operation.
The Ector County Sheriff’s Office and Odessa Fire Rescue asked SFMO to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. SFMO is also leading the investigation into the firefighter’s death.
Two investigations are ongoing. SFMO will work closely with local officials to determine the facts and circumstances. SFMO is part of the Texas Department of Insurance.
