A U.S. Department of Labor investigation has concluded that a Houston utility construction company exposed employees to safety risks after an excavation cave-in hospitalized a worker.
of the department Occupational Safety and Health Administration Blazey Construction Services LLC launched an investigation after the incident, which occurred while crews were installing sewer and water pipes at a housing development in Alvin, Texas. OSHA determined that the employer failed to adequately secure the excavation area, provide safe exits and report hospitalizations within 24 hours as required by federal law.
OSHA charged Blazey Construction Services with two repeat violations and one non-serious violation, with proposed penalties of $343,797.
The company has 15 business days after receiving the citation and penalty to comply, request an informal meeting with OSHA’s regional director, or challenge the findings to the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Board.
