Officials in Union Township, New Jersey, have released the identity of the person killed in Saturday night’s shooting at a Chick-Fil-A on Route 22.
The deceased has been identified as Malek Shepherd, 23, of New York City, according to the Union County Prosecutor’s Office and the Union Police Department.
Police said they found seven victims when they arrived at the scene around 9 p.m. Shepard, who was a customer at the time of the shooting, was pronounced dead at the scene. Six other victims were transported to local hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Police did not reveal the identity of the injured person.
No arrests have been made. A preliminary investigation shows the shooting did not appear to be a random act of violence. The investigation is ongoing. Police said there was no immediate threat to the public.
The investigation is being led by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force, with the Union Police Department deploying all investigative resources to assist.
Uniontown, where the shooting occurred, is a suburban community about 17 miles west of New York City and near Newark Airport. There is also a Union Township in western New Jersey, located in Hunterdon County near the Pennsylvania border.
