The North Carolina Ethics Commission has dismissed a sexual harassment complaint filed by a former employee against Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey, news outlets reported.
“After necessary review and discussion, the panel concluded its preliminary investigation and determined that the facts alleged in the complaint did not constitute a violation of the Ethics Act,” the Ethics Commission said in its findings to the Raleigh News & Observer. report This week.
The woman, April Taylor, showed the newspaper multiple text messages she said Causey had sent in recent years and provided an ethics ruling this week. A spokesman for the Department of Insurance told the newspaper that Causey had been informed of the dismissal.
Taylor said she also filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, a federal agency.
Causey, 75, told The News & Observer this spring that he did not recall sending the inappropriate text messages and denied initiating inappropriate physical contact. Taylor showed screenshots of some text messages to the newspaper, but Causey refused to let reporters see his phone, N&O report.
Taylor, 50, left the department earlier this year. She said she had problems with colleagues after she moved to the Home Office bail bonds unit and Causey failed to support her in the role. She filed several complaints against the department and Causey’s alleged use of state resources for campaign purposes, the newspaper reported.
