Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announced that the Kansas Department of Insurance has made its annual distribution to local Firefighter Relief Associations (FRA). Under the Kansas Firefighter Relief Act, $20,743,000 has been distributed to 552 FRAs in Kansas.
“Firefighters risk their lives to keep us safe, and the Kansas Firefighter Relief Act recognizes that by providing additional protections for firefighters and their loved ones,” said Commissioner Schmidt. “This bill not only provides first responders with a needed safety net, but it also allows local communities to provide improved firefighting equipment and resources to their citizens.”
The Kansas Firefighter Relief Act is funded by a two percent tax that insurance companies pay on premiums for fire and lightning insurance insured in Kansas. The association primarily uses its allocated funds for insurance premiums and enhanced security.
Relief funds can pay for health, accident, disability and life insurance premiums for local firefighters. Safety enhancements such as new fire engines, fire station building improvements and firefighting equipment can be purchased with relief funds loaned to local governing entities.
