A judge has temporarily blocked the National Science Foundation from disbanding the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), a globally important weather and climate research center in Boulder, Colorado.
Senior U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson granted the preliminary injunction Universities Corporation for Atmospheric Research, a consortium of institutions that manages NCAR. In March, the consortium sued the National Science Foundation, which provides much of NCAR’s budget, after it announced plans to split the center’s functions. The lawsuit specifically challenges plans to remove supercomputer facilities in Wyoming from the consortium’s management.

Since its founding in 1960, NCAR has trained generations of scientists who serve the military and other government agencies, developing models to predict climate change and deepening understanding of key weather phenomena such as El Niño and wind shear.
