UN experts on Monday denigrated Amid ongoing attacks on hospitals and medical workers in Sudan, and calls on the international community to take concrete action to protect the country’s collapsing health system.
The UN experts emphasized that systematic attacks on the Sudanese health system continue. The attacks continue despite the unanimous approval Resolution 2286 in 2016, which “strongly condemns attacks on medical facilities, personnel and transportation.” The experts suspect that the deterioration of the situation is a consequence of the international community’s inaction to ensure accountability and compliance with international law.
In April, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan Denise Brown commented on the inaction of the international community and the role it has played in Sudan Humanitarian crisis. She called the situation “an abandoned crisis.”
The World Health Organization Reports 217 attacks on health infrastructure and personnel in Sudan since April 15, 2025. Most recently on March 20 attack There were 64 deaths at Al Deain Teaching Hospital, including 13 children. The UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Dr. Tlaleng Mofokeng, says attacks on health facilities “directly undermine the right to health” and “may also constitute international crimes.”
Since the outbreak of the three-year war, Sudan has faced what the United Nations fears Calls “the world’s worst humanitarian and displacement crisis.” According to the report, around 34 million people are in need of humanitarian assistance, 14 million are displaced and 19 million are at risk of starvation. Worse still, 10 million children are denied the right to education. The United Nations also expressed concerns that the war in Iran could further deepen the crisis since “half of Sudan’s fertilizer comes from the Gulf.”
The UN experts warned that without action, Sudan’s health system will collapse, adding: “Protection without accountability remains meaningless.” They called on the international community to fulfill its obligations under Resolution 2286 and take concrete measures to end attacks on healthcare, rather than simply condemning them.
